Between November 2006 and April 2009 we used the prototype to create most of the eBooks that were published here.<\/p>\n<p>Since May 2009 Proboscis has been testing an entirely new version of the Generator which now has an API for other sites to call to generate eBooks and StoryCubes (Shareables). The new Generator supports:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>creation of\u00a0portrait\u00a0<em>and<\/em> <em>landscape<\/em> eBooks<\/li>\n<li>use of both \u2018classic\u2019\u00a0<em>and<\/em> \u2018<em>book<\/em>\u2018 binding methods for eBooks\u00a0(see our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/diffusion.org.uk\/?page_id=1092\" target=\"_blank\">design schematics<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>creation of single\u00a0<em>and<\/em> <em>double<\/em> sided StoryCubes<\/li>\n<li><em>offline<\/em> content\u00a0design\u00a0ability\u00a0for eBooks &amp; StoryCubes\u00a0(via PDF upload)<\/li>\n<li>ability to flow\u00a0<em>HTML content<\/em> into eBooks &amp; StoryCubes<\/li>\n<li>Unicode support for\u00a0<em>non-Roman<\/em> typefaces for languages such as Chinese, Arabic, Cyrillic, Greek, Japanese, Korean, Hebrew, Aramaic and many others<\/li>\n<li>eBook templates supporting\u00a0<em>right-to-left<\/em> languages (e.g. Arabic)<\/li>\n<li>support for\u00a0<em>personalised\/branded<\/em> eBook &amp; StoryCube templates<\/li>\n<li>support for\u00a0<em>future shareable<\/em> designs to be incorporated into Generator<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In late September 2009 we began testing a new web service built on the Generator,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bookleteer.com\" target=\"_blank\">bookleteer.com<\/a>. Over the next few months we will be seeding some pilot projects with partners and collaborators, as well as running a regular series of evening workshops, Pitch Up &amp; Publish. Some pilots will focus on our concept of &#8220;tangible souvenirs&#8221;: hybrid digital\/physical outputs from digital experiences that act as a bridge between the material and the digital worlds. Other pilots will look at specific sectors and uses such as local museums and voluntary groups, literary societies and education.<br \/>\nFollow bookleteer&#8217;s development on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/bookleteer\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<table style=\"background-color: #cccccc;\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"2\" width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"background-color: #000000;\" valign=\"top\">\n<td style=\"width: 100%; color: #ffffff;\"><strong><a name=\"code\"><\/a>OUR VISION<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Diffusion offers exciting possibilities for sharing of knowledge and information, especially in developing countries where lack of physical infrastructure means shipping bulky objects (like books) is difficult and expensive, but where internet communications are beginning to proliferate and low cost paper publications are still easier for most people to access and read than computer screens.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, Diffusion could be used to provide low-cost, easily updateable manuals for intermediate technologies; for promoting health awareness; for creating teaching and learning resources or as a publishing platform for citizen journalism.\u00a0Diffusion\u00a0provides an alternative to traditional print and online publishing \u2013 bridging analogue and digital media.
