\"3929220329_5f1bea67df_o\"<\/a>With the residency I was looking for ways to expand my use of Web 2.0. The\u00a0eBook Generator provides a useful format in which to distribute essays to\u00a0those who prefer not to read longer pieces online. Therefore I was looking\u00a0to integrate producing eBooks with my activities on social networking\u00a0sites such as Facebook, while simultaneously drawing some of the audience\u00a0that exists for the eBooks as a project in itself towards my own online\u00a0activities.<\/p>\n

My approach to this was to produce material that I felt would be of\u00a0interest to my audience both on social networking sites and beyond them\u00a0covering new(ish) material on subjects I\u2019ve had a long interest in,\u00a0including the London art world and psychedelic drugs. However, I adapted\u00a0my material after discussion of the eBook project with Giles Lane. Giles\u00a0not only showed me how to use the Generator, we also had several long\u00a0conversations about building an audience for this project and how\u00a0what I was doing might fit into this.<\/p>\n

Taking part in this process reinforced my view that it is possible, if\u00a0sometimes difficult, to move an audience from one web based content\u00a0delivery platform to another. Sometimes this is a matter of moving with\u00a0shifts in web usage. I moved to Facebook ahead of much of the audience I\u2019d\u00a0previously built on MySpace \u2013 but as the shift from the latter social\u00a0network to the former built, most of my old audience followed me. Getting\u00a0people using Facebook to download from the eBook Generator or to look at\u00a0material on other social networks such as YouTube is not as difficult to\u00a0get them to look at traditional websites. However, the overall lesson was,\u00a0as ever, persistence pays off. Rather than changing the way I worked, this\u00a0reinforced my view that I\u2019d been using the internet in an intelligent\u00a0manner.<\/p>\n

In the future I\u2019d be interested in looking at ways in which I might use\u00a0the Generator to develop my work as a novelist. It would be interesting to\u00a0create a serial style novel to be delivered chapter by chapter via the\u00a0Generator. This would, however, be a major commitment and in my view would\u00a0require some extra funding to promote it in order to reach a large enough\u00a0audience for the amount of effort involved to be worthwhile.<\/p>\n

I found Giles and his team very productive to work with, but also great\u00a0fun \u2013 and I enjoyed my free ranging lunch break conversations every bit as\u00a0much as the actual work!<\/p>\n
