About : A project about being 18 now and what it was like to be 18 in the past. We have looked at changes in people’s homes, work and entertainment as reflected in their oral history testimony and material culture. We have also explored the challenges young people face today and the challenges they have faced in the last 60 years. The project has been a collaboration between Norfolk Museums & Archaeology Service and MAP, a youth charity providing free and independent advice, counselling, youth work and education to young people.

About : These eBooks are extrapolated from the visual essay I composed at Proboscis during my four months internship, loosely based on their work and projects.
First it developed as a concise mind map which outlined the fundamental design underpinning Proboscis’ long journey. It then evolved and bloomed in different and unexpected directions, drawing on my past knowledge, feeding on fortuitous connections and new sources of inspiration. It was elaborated following different paths even if I found myself juxtaposing pictures or quotations, originally designed for separate ‘themes’, pleasantly coming together. The lines I have drawn are just some of the infinite possible threads I could have kept to.
This is my own series of allusions, suggestions, relations and reflections about citizenship, storytelling, the mapping process and space, place, city.

About : Cartoon de Salvo are now publishing four more books recording some of what is now over 100 improvised stage stories (and two updated books). Hard Hearted Hannah and Other Stories is a brand new, entirely improvised adventure. To begin we elicit a ‘simple title of, for example, a movie that’s never been made’ from an audience member. Then they choose a few songs from a playlist of our band’s repertoire. We think for a few seconds and then we start, working in those songs and the show lasts between 50 mins and up to 2 hours. We never limited ourselves to any place, genre or time. We place implicit trust in each other’s narrative instinct. The idea is, having been exposed to stories all of our lives, we all have a very developed sense of what should happen next.
This series of Diffusion eBooks explores some of the patterns that came randomly out of the air, as told by Brian Logan and illustrated by Alex Murdoch. The first two books were ‘Classics from Nowhere’ – where we tapped into story structures from myths and fairytales and ‘World of the Strange and Bizarre‘ where our unconcious minds led us into some very odd situations indeed. Now we are adding four books looking at how Music we play influenced stories, how Mysteries created more complex storylines. Two more explore how Silent Characters and Tangled Relationships made for surprising turns in our yarns. The idea of course is these stories existed in their moment over the past two years; but when I discovered that Brian was writing them down the following day I thought I’d put them together with my illustrations that I was getting down in the van after each gig.

Cartoon de Salvo are of the few companies in the UK working with whole story, rather than sketch-based, improvisation formats. Hard Hearted Hannah and Other Stories went on to become the Telegraph’s Top Ten Comedy Shows of 2008 and following the British Council Showcase in Edinburgh we were invited to take it to Washington DC’s Kennedy Center. We’re now working on a new long-form impro format called Made Up, in which we collaborate with a band; we’re next performing that at Pulse Festival in June 2011.

Founded in 1997, Cartoon de Salvo is one of the country’s most respected theatre companies. Their cocktail of script-defying improvisation, live music and exceptional storytelling has won critical acclaim and a devoted following. About : Having looked at the diverse range of published StoryCubes on the Diffusion and Bookleteer websites, I found that each had an inspiring story to tell or contained overlooked information to be acknowledged. But it wasn’t just the content of these publications which interested me, it was how the content was presented in the form of a cube.
When holding a cube you find yourself tempted to see whats on the other faces, with this in mind I decided to make a game which will go hand in hand with the eBooks. The concept of the game was fairly simple, from the starting point pick a path (line) and follow it around the cube until you reached a destination. Several paths would overlap, giving the player a choice to change direction. Once the player had reached a destination, they will use the eBook to find out its description.
With this idea it creates a different kind of interaction with the cube, instead of being guided by text, the player is free to choose and explore any chosen path. Or in some cases the player might try to work out a way to reach a specific destination.
Apart from readjusting the orientation of one or two pages, the eBook was fairly straightforward to make. Without the need of additional glue or staples and only using the slotting mechanism the finished eBook was very secure. Overall I had fun and enjoyed making the StoryCube with the eBook and look forward to seeing what other people create.

About : Recently our neighbours, Cosmo China, celebrated their 20th anniversary with an exhibition of special hand painted plates by some of their artists and friends. Proboscis helped them put together a simple book showing all the plates with biographical details of each of the artists. Co-owner of Cosmo and artist, Josie Firmin, painted the picture on the front cover.

Cosmo China is a handpainted ceramics studio and shop in Bloomsbury London. The shop was opened in 1990 by Josie Firmin & Christopher Strangeways, and a second shop was opened in Canterbury, Kent in 1992. There are currently over 15 artists painting for Cosmo in both shops.

About : Cocktail Recipes is an eBook designed for people aged 18 years and over. It’s about making cocktails, which can be fun, and can also give you ideas for parties or a night in with your friends. I started off by looking for very different types of cocktails, form each other, and even looked at some of their history. I then collected images that related to the cocktails to add that decorative effect. Using Neo Office Drawing, I arranged the images and content I had to present this eBook. It was fun researching for this eBook, I even tried a couple or recipes my self. Make a couple yourself and see how fun it is.

About : Greenhill Digital Storytelling Guide: This is a short guide to community research and how the digital story is formed. It details some handy hints about how you identify interviewees, writing your interview questions and how you actually build a historical digital “story”. These stories can be really engaging because they mix images with a real experience of life in a particular community. They can also be shared really easily and are very cheap to produce if you don’t have much of a budget. You can record interviews and combine the voice with digital images from archives or images of objects that have meaning, to create something really visual and emotional.

Gillian Cowell is a community worker and researcher based in Bonnybridge, Stirlingshire, and a doctoral student at the University of Stirling exploring civic learning and the construction of public space. Her research interests include public sphere and public space theory towards a better understanding of community education as public education. She is involved in exploring derelict and historical spaces of post-industrial communities with residents, and how these spaces transform into public and political sites, revealing and reigniting debate about contemporary challenges.

About : I initially came up with this idea when brainstorming for usage of the eBooks. The thought book originally started as a personal diary but then transformed into a thought book for both sexes and also different age groups. The design of the thought book is so simple it can be made at home.
I started off by accumulating different phrases, and then getting clipart to accompany the phrases. They then had to be arranged which was fun. I used a software package called Neo Office which allowed me to write text on top or behind pictures/drawings. I then had to create a template with lines in order to create a notepad which I was easily copy and pasted to create a few notepad pages. I am extremely pleased with my thought book and invite you to try and make your own.

Shalene is a qualified legal secretary and studied for 2 years at City of Westminster college. She then went on to work in the legal field for a few years. About : Cook ‘N’ Colour is an eBook designed to help create bonds between children and adults. This eBook was based on the thought of being able to let children cook easy to do recipes and get creative by colouring in the drawings of the finished dishes. I got the recipes from my own knowledge of the dishes and printed, traced and scanned the images to my own design. Cook ‘N’ Colour is another book that has been added to the set of family eBooks I’ve been working on.
